Living rooms are where the compromises show. A television on a bracket with a cable running down the wall. A bookcase that doesn't quite fill the alcove. A chimney breast that everything has to be arranged around.
Built-in joinery solves all three at once, and in an older house it usually looks like it was always there - which is the point. The best fitted work in a living room isn't the thing people comment on. It's the thing that makes the room look finished without them being able to say why.
Media walls
A media wall looks like a straightforward job and isn't. Most of the work happens before anything is visible, and most of the ones that go wrong go wrong for reasons that were decided at first fix.
A large television cannot hang off plasterboard. The wall needs proper timber behind the bracket position, put there before boarding, in the right place for the screen size you're actually buying.
AV equipment in an enclosed cabinet gets hot. Amplifiers and consoles in particular. Ventilation has to be designed in - passive gaps at minimum, and sometimes more than that - or the kit runs hot and fails early.
Every cable route has to exist before the wall is boarded. HDMI, power, network, speaker runs, and a conduit or two spare for whatever you buy in three years. Retrofitting a cable through a finished media wall means taking part of it apart.
If the equipment sits behind doors, it needs to still work - either an infrared repeater or a design that lets you open and reach without dismantling anything.
Behind the screen, at the right height, and enough of them. This is the most common thing people wish they'd doubled.
Inset electric fires have specified clearances and a direction they throw heat. Those dimensions come first and the joinery is built around them, not the other way round.
The electrical work is carried out by a qualified electrician. We coordinate it so first fix happens before the wall goes up rather than after.

Feature walls
Panelled and slatted walls have gone from a trend to a fixture, and the difference between one that looks right and one that looks stuck on is mostly proportion.
Panel heights that relate to the room and to the skirting rather than to a standard sheet size. Slat spacing that suits the wall length. Detail that matches the period of the house - a Victorian house takes something different to a nineties semi, and the wrong one is immediately obvious even to people who couldn't tell you why.
We build these in timber, scribed to the wall, and finish them in whatever colour the room needs.

Shelving
Almost every Victorian and Edwardian house around Leigh-on-Sea and older Southend has a chimney breast with an alcove either side, and almost none of those alcoves are the same width as each other.
That's why bought bookcases never look right in them. Built-in shelving and cupboards run to the actual dimensions, floor to ceiling if you want, with cupboard doors below and open shelving above - which is usually the right split, because it hides the things you don't want to look at.
Shelves are made to carry books rather than to look like they could. Span, thickness and support are worked out for the load, not assumed.
We also build window seats, understairs joinery and storage benches where the room suits it.
construction
Some of this work is built in the workshop and installed; some of it is built in the room, because that's the only way to make it fit a wall that isn't straight. Which approach suits depends on the job, and we'll tell you which we're doing and why.
Cabinet elements are made to the same standard as our kitchen furniture - custom carcases, cam and dowel construction, Blum drawers and hinges with soft close. Timber elements are made and finished by us.
We fit media walls, feature walls and shelving across Hockley, Rayleigh, Rochford, Thorpe Bay, Leigh-on-Sea and Southend-on-Sea.
The Victorian and Edwardian houses around Leigh and older Southend are the ones that suit this best - high ceilings, deep alcoves and a chimney breast in the middle of the wall. Thorpe Bay's 1930s stock takes it well too, for the same reason. Built-in shelving in those rooms looks like it was always there, which is the whole point.
