Who We Are
We're a small, independent family business. There are three of us, we're brothers, and between us we cover the whole job...
Design, carpentry and site management.
That's not a marketing structure. It's just what happened. Our dad was a carpenter, and one by one we ended up working with him and then with each other.
What it means for you is straightforward. The person who draws your kitchen is the person you'll speak to about it. The people who fit it are the people who work here. Nothing gets passed to a subcontractor we've never met, and nobody hands you over to someone else once the deposit clears.
Who we are
A family business, three brothers, one standard
James Charles Interiors is run by three brothers - James, Joe and Jack Buckingham. James started his carpentry apprenticeship in 2008 under our father. Joe followed in 2012 and now leads the design side of the business. Jack came to us after an engineering degree and works on installation alongside James. Between the three of us we manage every project ourselves.
That structure is the whole point. The person who designs your kitchen is the person you speak to about it. The people who fit it are the people who work here. Nothing is handed to a subcontractor we've never met, and nobody disappears once the deposit clears.
We design, supply and install bespoke kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, home offices and fitted furniture across South Essex. We manage every trade the job needs - heating engineers, electricians, plasterers, decorators... so you're dealing with one company from the first drawing to the final handover.

Meet the team
James Buckingham
Carpentry & installation
James has been in the trade since 2008 and served his apprenticeship under our dad. He and Jack lead installation, which means they're the ones making sure a kitchen designed on a screen actually fits a house that was built in 1936 and isn't square anywhere. If something on site needs solving, it's usually solved between them.
Joe Buckingham
Design
Joe spent six years installing kitchens before he ever designed one, which is the right way round. He runs the design side, produces the CAD drawings and visuals, and holds a degree in kitchen design. He'll be the one who comes out, measures up and puts your drawings together.
Jack Buckingham
Installation & Project Management
Jack came to the business after an engineering degree and decided the family firm was where he wanted to be. He works on installation alongside James, and shares project management with the rest of us - booking the other trades, sequencing them, and dealing with it when something slips. The engineering background shows up in the planning and the problem-solving more than anywhere else.
How we like to do things
We tell you what things cost, early.
There's no benefit to anyone in designing a kitchen that's twice your budget. We'd rather have the awkward conversation at the measuring-up stage than at the quote.
We do the fitting ourselves.
Three of us are time-served carpenters. A lot of companies our size will design a kitchen and then find someone to fit it. That's where quality tends to go, and it's why we don't do it.
We don't disappear.
We're based at our studio in Hockley and most of our work is local. If something needs looking at in three years, we're still here, and we're still the same three people.
We use good components.
Blum drawers and hinges, Kessebohmer wirework, carcases made for your room from 18mm board rather than cut down from a standard size. It costs more and it's the part nobody sees, which is exactly why it's worth being careful about.
